Structure of Arguments

Example #5:

Argument? Yes

Maria: Really it was Einstein’s wife who was the great genius. 1 She was the one who had the ideas that went into those early papers “he” wrote about relativity. 2 They were working together. 3

Harry: Look, there weren’t two geniuses like Einstine. That’s beyond probability. 1 And after those earlier papers, he continued to make incredible scientific breakthroughs. 2 While his wife never did anything scientifically important again. I don’t doubt that she had some input into those early works, maybe even did equal work with him at the beginning. 3 But it was Einstein who saw the ideas through and made them real to people and who continued to do great work. It wasn’t his wife. 4

Conclusion: Harry made a better argument with stronger supporting premises than Maria. He supports it with the probability of two geniuses being in contemporary is impossible. Plus if his wife is a genius like Einstein then she should have done more work to show for her genius.

I did all of the exercises by going through all the steps. It was a little helpful in understanding on how to analyze the argument and the premises.
