Week #3 Leadership

From chapter 3 in the Group Communication text, I find the definitions the authors have on leadership are quite interesting and there are several types of leadership. The four common leadership styles discussed in the book are authoritarian, consultative, participative, and laissez-faire. Authoritarian leader make decisions and directs it to the group without inputs from anyone else. This kind of leadership tends to have low commitment and low satisfaction from the group. The second common leadership is consultative leadership where the leader facilitates a discussion among members of the group but the decision is still ultimately made by the leader. Members of this leadership are frustrated sometimes because they think it is just a façade and because they wasted time contributing their ideas just to have its outcome be something entirely different. Third is participative leadership which is more regarded by members because everyone has the same authority and opinions do matter. It typically takes longer to come to a decision but it usually has higher commitment, satisfaction, and result. The last one and also the least favorable leadership is laissez-faire leadership. It is unfavorable because this style of leadership has little or no involvement from leader according to members.
